Airway-safe harnesses for French Bulldogs

Why the collar is the wrong leash point for a Frenchie
French Bulldogs are brachycephalic, meaning they have a shortened skull and soft tissue that can crowd the airway. The University of Cambridge's BOAS research group studies this as brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome. When a leash pulls on a collar, the pressure lands right over the windpipe. The UK Brachycephalic Working Group advises walking flat-faced dogs on a harness instead, because collar pressure can compress the airway and get in the way of panting, which is how dogs cool down.
What to look for
- Straps that stay off the throat. Once the harness is on, you should see clear space between the front straps and the throat.
- A chest strap behind the elbows, so it doesn't rub in the "armpit."
- The two-finger check. Two fingers should slide under every strap.
- Breathable materials for warm months (mesh), keeping in mind that no harness makes hot-weather exercise safe.
- An easy way on. Frenchie heads are wide, so step-in or buckle-at-the-neck designs can help.
The harnesses in our Fit Finder
We only include a harness after reading its chest chart directly on the manufacturer's own site. Specs last checked 2026-10-21. This is a published-spec comparison, not a hands-on test.

For what it's worth, Maggie currently walks in the Voyager Step-In Air Dog Vest Harness, size Large (Turquoise 2-Tone). That's just what she wears right now, not a test result or a recommendation. Your dog's size depends on your dog's own chest measurement, so run it through the Fit Finder.

FAQ
Should a French Bulldog wear a collar or a harness?
Clip the leash to a harness. The UK Brachycephalic Working Group and veterinary guidance for brachycephalic airway syndrome both note that leash pressure on a collar can compress the airway in flat-faced dogs. A collar is fine for holding ID tags.
How do I measure my Frenchie for a harness?
Wrap a soft tape around the widest part of the rib cage, just behind the front legs. Keep it snug but not tight, and write the number down in inches or centimeters. Each brand says exactly where to measure, so check the notes in our Fit Finder.
What if my dog is between two sizes?
Follow the maker's own rule. Ruffwear, Kurgo and Puppia say to size up. Voyager says the Step-In Air should match the chest closely and stay under the size's max weight. Julius-K9 says to measure where the belly strap will sit.
Front clip or back clip?
A front (chest) ring helps redirect a dog that pulls. A back ring suits a dog that already walks on a loose leash. Whichever you use, the harness straps should stay clear of the throat.
