French Bulldog size chart & "on track?" check

Adult size by breed standard
| Source | Males | Females | Height at shoulder |
|---|---|---|---|
| AKC standard (US) | Not to exceed 28 lb (12.7 kg); over 28 lb is a show disqualification | not specified | |
| UK Kennel Club standard | Ideal 12.5 kg (28 lb) | Ideal 11 kg (24 lb) | not specified |
| FCI standard (2023) | 9–14 kg (19.8–30.9 lb) | 8–13 kg (17.6–28.7 lb) | Males 27–35 cm (10.6–13.8 in); females 24–32 cm (9.4–12.6 in) |
| UK vet records (O'Neill 2018, dogs over 18 months) | Average 13.7 kg (30.2 lb), SD 2.4 kg | Average 11.5 kg (25.4 lb), SD 2.1 kg | not recorded |
Breed standards describe the ideal show dog. The UK Kennel Club notes that its standard "does not imply that a dog will match the measurements given." The vet-record averages describe real pet Frenchies, healthy or not.
1 kg ≈ 2.2 lb. Bars show ranges; the dark tick marks the UK average; the amber line marks the AKC 28 lb (12.7 kg) maximum.
Size by age: what's actually known
| Age | What the sources say |
|---|---|
| Birth to 12 months | Rapid growth. In UK vet records, French Bulldog puppies "grow rapidly during their first year" (O'Neill et al. 2018). Weigh regularly and bring the log to vet visits. |
| 12 months to ~3 years | Still filling out: the same data show Frenchies "continue to gain further weight up to three years." Watch body condition so filling out doesn't become extra fat. |
| Adult | Compare against the standards above, but judge health by body condition (below). |
Why no month-by-month weights? We couldn't find a French Bulldog weight-by-age table from a breed club, kennel club or veterinary source, and we won't publish numbers we can't source. For puppies, vets can use general growth standard charts built from more than 6 million healthy puppies seen in US vet hospitals (Salt et al. 2017), which sort dogs by expected adult size rather than breed. Ask your vet to chart your puppy's weight at each visit.
Is my Frenchie on track?
The body-condition questions paraphrase the WSAVA body condition score chart (ideal = 4–5 on its 9-point scale). This is a home check, not a diagnosis. Nothing you enter leaves your browser.
FAQ
How big does a French Bulldog get?
Breed standards give the clearest numbers. The AKC standard says weight must not exceed 28 lb. The FCI standard gives 9–14 kg (about 20–31 lb) and 27–35 cm tall at the shoulder for males, and 8–13 kg (about 18–29 lb) and 24–32 cm for females. In UK vet records, adult males averaged 13.7 kg (about 30 lb) and females 11.5 kg (about 25 lb).
Is there an official French Bulldog weight-by-age chart?
Not that we could find. The AKC, the UK Kennel Club and the FCI publish adult sizes, not month-by-month puppy weights, and the weight-by-month charts on many websites don't cite a source. For puppies, vets can use general growth standard charts built from millions of healthy puppies (Salt et al. 2017) and body condition scoring.
When do French Bulldogs stop growing?
In UK vet data, French Bulldog puppies grew rapidly during their first year and kept gaining some weight up to about three years old (O'Neill et al. 2018).
My Frenchie weighs more than 28 lb. Is that a problem?
Not necessarily. 28 lb is the AKC show-ring limit, not a health threshold, and the FCI allows males up to 14 kg (about 31 lb). What matters for health is body condition: can you easily feel the ribs, and see a waist and a tummy tuck? Use the check above and ask your vet.
Why does body condition matter so much for a Frenchie?
Extra weight makes airway problems and overheating worse in flat-faced dogs. The UK Brachycephalic Working Group recommends keeping them lean, and the ACVS notes obesity aggravates brachycephalic syndrome.
