Home, sleep & feeding for French Bulldogs

Not veterinary advice. This is general information gathered from veterinary schools and published research. It isn't a diagnosis or a treatment plan. Talk to your veterinarian about your own dog, and if your Frenchie is struggling to breathe, collapses, or overheats, go to an emergency vet now. Full disclaimer.
Weight comes first
Gear won't make up for extra pounds. Guidance for vets on managing brachycephalic airway syndrome notes that obesity makes airway obstruction worse. The UK Brachycephalic Working Group recommends keeping flat-faced dogs at a lean body weight, partly because obesity reduces how well panting cools them. Measure meals, count treats, and ask your vet to score your dog's body condition.
Bowls & feeders
Shallow, wide bowls
A short muzzle can reach the bottom without pushing the face deep into the bowl. A non-slip base stops it sliding around.
Browse shallow bowlsSlow feeders
For fast eaters. Pick low, shallow ridges a flat face can work around. Deep, narrow mazes can frustrate a short-muzzled dog.

Bolster or orthopedic beds
A low entry, firm support, a raised edge to rest the chin on, and a removable, washable cover.

In warm months, move the bed out of the sun and away from heat sources. A cooling mat in a shady spot can help (see our heat guide).
Food
We don't recommend specific diets. Food choice, allergies and portion size are questions for your veterinarian, especially for a breed with sensitive skin and stomachs. Ask your vet before switching foods.
Life with a floor vacuum
Maggie has a vacuum-style ability to eat anything that hits the floor. In our house it's a big part of why we keep floors and low surfaces clear of dropped food and small objects, and why slow feeders and measured meals (above) appeal to us. Whatever lands on the floor is going into a dog's mouth fast, so it pays to think about what could land there. If your dog swallows something worrying, call your vet.
And for the record, her favorite cozy spot isn't a dog bed at all. It's our extra-large bean bag. Whatever your Frenchie picks, the bed checklist above still applies.
FAQ
Why does body weight matter so much for a Frenchie?
Veterinary guidance on brachycephalic airway syndrome says obesity makes airway obstruction worse, and the UK Brachycephalic Working Group says being overweight makes panting less effective at cooling. Ask your vet what a lean body condition looks like for your dog.
What bowl works best for a flat face?
A shallow, wide bowl is easier for a short muzzle to reach into. If your dog eats very fast, a slow feeder with low, shallow ridges can slow things down without frustrating them.
What should I look for in a bed?
Something easy to climb into, a raised edge (bolster) to rest the chin on, and a washable cover. Put it somewhere cool in summer.
