The safety checks (from vets)
1. Size
"Not small enough to swallow or fit whole into the mouth," but "not so large that they can't comfortably chew on it" (Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine). The AAHA's rule of thumb for chews: bigger than your dog's snout and slightly wider than the mouth.
2. Hardness
The AAHA's checks: you should be able to dent it with a thumbnail, it should bend slightly, and if you couldn't hammer a nail into it, it's too hard. Very hard chews can fracture teeth.
3. Durability
Your dog shouldn't be able to rip pieces off or reach stuffing (AAHA). Texas A&M flags squeakers, stuffing and shredded rope as swallowing hazards that can block the gut.
4. Supervision & rotation
Give one or two toys at a time instead of a whole basket, so you notice missing pieces (Texas A&M). Inspect toys regularly and toss anything falling apart. If you think your dog swallowed part of a toy, call your vet.
What "flat-face-friendly" means
- Easy to grip. A short muzzle has less reach. Toys with a narrow section, handle or nubby texture are easier to pick up than smooth, round shapes that are just the wrong size.
- Low-effort puzzles. Lick mats and shallow puzzle feeders give mental work without hard breathing. Deep, narrow treat chambers can frustrate a flat face.
- Calm play. Long games of fetch or tug can push a brachycephalic dog too hard, especially in heat. Short bursts, then rest.

Chews to think twice about
The AAHA lists bones, sticks, rocks, yak milk chews, antlers and rawhide among hard chews that can damage or fracture teeth, and notes that hooves, pig ears and bully sticks may carry bacteria such as Salmonella and E. coli. Texas A&M adds that cooked bones can splinter and injure the gut. Ask your vet what's suitable for your dog.
Why we're strict about broken toys
Maggie eats anything that lands on the floor. In a house with a dog like that, a torn toy or a chewed-off piece doesn't stay on the floor for long, so broken toys go straight in the trash.

FAQ
What toys are safe for French Bulldogs?
Toys sized so they can't be swallowed or fit whole in the mouth, but not so big your dog can't comfortably chew them (Texas A&M). Durable enough that your dog can't rip off pieces or get to stuffing, and not so hard they could crack a tooth. The AAHA suggests chews should be bigger than your dog's snout and slightly wider than the mouth.
How do I tell if a chew is too hard?
The AAHA's tests: press your thumbnail into it (if it won't dent, it's too hard), check that it bends slightly, and if you couldn't drive a nail through it, your dog shouldn't chew it. The AAHA lists bones, antlers, rocks, sticks, yak chews and rawhide among hard chews that can damage teeth.
What toys are best for a heavy chewer?
Skip plush, squeaky and rope toys, which Texas A&M notes can be shredded and swallowed. Look for durable rubber toys sized one size up from the recommendation (AAHA's tip for power chewers), and supervise. Inspect toys regularly and throw out anything breaking apart.
Are squeaky toys safe?
For gentle players, under supervision. Texas A&M warns squeakers can be swallowed and cause intestinal blockages, and stuffing can block the gut too, especially in smaller dogs. Take the toy away once it's torn.
How much play is too much for a Frenchie?
Keep play in short bursts with rest breaks, and skip energetic games when it's warm or humid. Flat-faced dogs overheat easily. See our heat guide and breathing guide.
